The challenge: protecting heavy freight for international transit
Shipping heavy, delicate artworks requires more than standard parcel packaging. The two wooden statues required dedicated internal protection, while the external crates needed to be structurally sound for mechanical handling throughout the international freight journey.
Furthermore, the packing materials and documentation had to comply strictly with Colombian import regulations. This required a unified approach to physical crating, mechanical handling preparation, and international customs coordination.
Our approach
As an established logistics provider headquartered on the Costa del Sol, eColoso scales brands globally with door-to-door delivery covering 220+ countries. As outlined in the "eColoso sales: Tech-Driven 3PL and Global Logistics Solutions" reference document, our global delivery solutions optimize multi-carrier routing. For this bespoke assignment, our methodology included:
1. Made-to-measure crating
We commissioned two custom wooden boxes, one for each statue. Bespoke sizing ensured the packing plan was built entirely around the objects' unique dimensions while remaining suitable for import into Colombia.
2. Protective wrapping & filling
Each statue was tightly wrapped in moving blankets to protect the wooden surfaces. Polystyrene filling was then added to cushion the objects and prevent internal shifting during transit.
3. Mechanical handling preparation
Because each finished crate weighed 67 kg, we screwed down both lids and added specialized base supports. This allowed the crates to be safely moved by forklifts or pallet trucks, heavily reducing the risk of handling damage.
4. Documentation & clearance
We prepared all necessary customs clearance documentation in tandem with the physical packing and freight booking to ensure a synchronized dispatch.
5. Post-dispatch support
The crates were routed via FedEx Economy Freight. When standard customs issues arose upon the shipment's arrival in Colombia, we provided active, destination-side support to assist the receiver.
The outcome & practical lesson
The assignment successfully delivered two 38 kg wooden statues secured in bespoke 67 kg crates, supported by comprehensive clearance documentation.
For heavy or delicate objects, internal protective wrapping and external freight handling must be planned as a single ecosystem.
This shipment also demonstrates that international logistics often requires active customs support long after the freight has left its origin point.
